What information would you expect to find in a Fat/Cat Report? You would expect to find information on workplace fatalities and catastrophes. This report publishes by OSHA, which stands for Occupational Safety & Health Administration. This regulatory body is the agency of the US Department of Labor.

The Fatality Catastrophe reviews the introductory knowledge presented to OSHA from organizations. This obligated to inform OSHA of fatalities and catastrophes (FAT/CAT) in accordance with the OSHA standards. The FAT/CAT report contains the following information:

  • Date of incident
  • Company and location
  • Preliminary description of the incident

Congress under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 created OSHA. Their responsibility involves worker safety and health protection. This Act existed in December 20, 1970 when President Nixon signed the OSH act. This until today, it is now OSHA. An agency that formed in April 28, 1971.

What does OSHA covers and does not cover?

With the creation of OSHA, all employers in the United States have the legal responsibility to provide a safe and healthy workplace for all employees. OSHA covers all employers and their workers from all private sectors coming from 50 states. This counts to all territories and jurisdictions under the federal authority. This act also covers religious groups if they employ workers for a definite job such as maintenance and gardening.

OSHA does not cover self-employed, immediate members of farming families not employing outside workers. Mine workers, truck workers, transportation workers and energy workers. These workers covered by other federal agencies. OSHA does not also cover public employees in states and local governments, some states have their own plans that cover these workers.

Explanation of FAT/CAT Report

What information would you expect to find in a Fat/Cat Report? Regarding fatalities and catastrophes (FAT/CAT), fatality is the condition when an employee’s death causes an accident or an illness. This relates to an accident or an illness caused by a hazard happening in the workplace. Catastrophe is the hospitalization for three or more employees, but no deaths. This too relates an accident or an illness caused by the workplace hazard. 

If this hazard occurs, the employer will informed by the CSHO (Certified Safety and Health Official) certificate. This works by conducting interviews of witnesses and other people who were involved in the hazard. The purpose of an accident investigation will explain to look into:

  • The cause of the accident
  • Whether the violation of OSHA standard relates to the accident occurred.
  • What effect would the violation occur of the accident
  • If OSHA standards should revise to the right hazardous working condition that led to the accident happening in the workplace.

As mentioned earlier, FAT/ CAT contain the date of incident, company and location and description of the incident. All employers have the legal right to provide a safe and healthy workplace for all employees. This only implies to private sectors only. All employees has the right to receive training from their employer on various health and safety hazards, which the employer must follow the standards of OSHA.
